Next-generation
imaging
I’m a neuroscience researcher at the University of Edinburgh exploring how high-speed, ultra-sensitive imaging could help scientists, clinicians, and autonomous systems operate in low-light conditions.
About
From neuroscience to broader imaging challenges.
My research focuses on how the brain processes information at millisecond timescales. During my PhD, I worked on high-speed, ultra-sensitive imaging systems designed to detect faint fluorescent signals from neurons that are often invisible to conventional cameras.
This work led me to a broader question: Could such imaging systems help solve challenges beyond the laboratory?
I’m currently exploring potential applications in:
Fluorescence and low-light scientific imaging
Endoscopy and minimally invasive medical devices
Robotics and autonomous systems
Industrial and low-visibility inspection
Navigation and sensing in challenging environments
The project is currently part of the Innovate UK ICURe programme for market discovery and commercial exploration.
The Challenge
Many real-world signals are both fast and faint, making them difficult to detect with current conventional cameras.
Existing systems often require a trade-off between speed and sensitivity, leading to missed events or unreliable data, especially in low-light environments. This limits performance in areas such as scientific research, clinical diagnostics and surgery, and autonomous systems, where accurate and timely information is essential.
The Technology
Imaging inspired by neuroscience.
The imaging approach I integrated in my work is based on single-photon detection technology, enabling highly sensitive measurements under low-light conditions.
The system combines:
High speed
Ultra-high sensitivity
Low noise
Compact and lightweight design
I’m currently exploring where this type of imaging could provide the greatest real-world impact.
